La Manufactura Aymat was a benchmark and a turning point in the evolution of contemporary tapestry in Catalonia.
La Manufactura Aymat was a reference point and a turning point in the evolution of contemporary tapestry in Catalonia. Tomàs Aymat, founder of the manufactory, reintroduced the tapestry technique into a renewed artistic context. With beginnings strongly linked to decorative arts, noucentisme and art déco, it was from 1959, under the business direction of Miquel Samaranch, that the manufactory began to assimilate the new trends emerging in Europe. In Sant Cugat, the so-called Escola Catalana de Tapís was born, a proper way of understanding textile art that developed in parallel to the Nouvelle Tapisserie. This exhibition puts the work of Aurèlia Muñoz in dialogue with that of other artists who frequented the Manufactura Aymat, such as Esther Boix, Maria Teresa Codina, Maria Girona, Josep Grau-Garriga, Josep Guinovart, Joan Hernández Pijuan, Albert Ràfols-Casamada, Maria Assumpció Raventós, Josep Royo and Josep Maria Subirachs. This activity is framed within the commemoration of the Any Aurèlia Muñoz.
