Josep Maria de Sucre (Barcelona, 1886-1969) was a painter, poet, art critic and one of the great cultural promoters of his time. His trajectory occupies a key place in the transition from Noucentisme to the avant-garde of 20th-century Catalonia. With advanced sensitivity for his time, his work anticipates some neoexpressionist approaches that would emerge decades later, especially in the way of delving into human psychology through the face. Faces, masks and portraits become spaces for exploring inner life, marked by expressive intensity and unsettling depth that appeal directly to the audience. This exhibition pays tribute to Josep Maria de Sucre by highlighting not only his artistic production, but also his decisive role as a spiritual patron of a generation of artists from the immediate postwar period. The show brings together works from around thirty Catalan creators who took up the momentum of the first avant-gardes, interrupted by the Civil War. In this context, Sucre's task was fundamental as a bridge between artists linked to the Republican period and the new emerging creators who, thanks to scholarships from the Institut Francès for stays in Paris, were able to reconnect with international artistic currents and with a cosmopolitan modernity. In this way, the exhibition proposal aims to rediscover a figure and a historical moment that demand close attention within the narrative of postwar Catalan art. The curators are Aitor Quiney and Joan Gil Gregorio. More information: Facebook of the Fundació Vila Casas Instagram of the Fundació Vila Casas
