The mirror is a recurring motif in the history of culture.
The mirror is a recurring motif in the history of culture. Present in mythology, religion, philosophy, art, literature and cinema, its meaning has evolved over time. Traditionally, it has acted as a metaphor for identity but also as a magical object, projection of the soul, threshold between two worlds or mechanism to discover what is hidden. Despite the variations, the mirror retains a disturbing dimension because it puts into play the tension between knowledge and its reverse: deception, duplication or the abyss. Joaquim Jordà's entire filmography (Santa Coloma de Farners, 1945 - Barcelona, 2006) can be interpreted in this key: as an inquiry into reality and its representation. Translator, critic, teacher, screenwriter and director, Jordà turned his work into a device where he aimed to reveal the world while questioning whether it was revealable. With this purpose he filled his films with mirrors, glass, reflections, doubles, simulacra and fictions. His trajectory is framed and closed with mirrors. It begins in 1959 with Patata en patata, a student exercise in which a girl manipulates a mirror to deflect the sun's rays. It concludes in 2006 with Més enllà del mirall, finished posthumously by his collaborators and inspired by the adventures of Alice from Lewis Carroll, a fundamental reference in the specular tradition. This exhibition reviews, on the twentieth anniversary of his death, Joaquim Jordà's legacy through the mirror, a crucial object in the history of culture and central in the filmography of one of the most influential authors of Catalan cinema. The curator is Cristina Rubio. More information: Facebook of the Cinema Museum Instagram of the Cinema Museum Girona Cultura Platform
