Exposició "Josep Anselm Clavé. D'Icària a la República Federal"

In 2024, the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Josep Anselm Clavé (Barcelona, 1824-1874), a relevant figure in the contemporary history of Catalonia, is commemorated. Currently, he is remembered for having promoted a network of choral societies that, since the mid-nineteenth century, maintains its vigour despite political vicissitudes and social and cultural transformations in our country. However, this musical and associative project was part of a much broader vital and professional trajectory. Of liberal and progressive thought, Clavé's aim was to transform the Kingdom of Spain into a democratic republic, and to do so, he developed multiple facets: he risked family heritage to organise concerts, founded several newspapers and compiled a catalogue of outstanding musical and poetic works. He also became a charismatic political leader, a fact that on several occasions led to his exile, imprisonment and exile. The exhibition "Josep Anselm Clavé. D'Icària a la República Federal" presents all these aspects of the figure arranged chronologically and places them in the political, social and cultural context that belongs to them, from the discovery of the philosophical novel Voyage en Icarie by Étienne Cabet in his youth to the political positions he developed during the First Republic.
