Penny Siopis (Veryburg, South Africa, 1953) lives and works in South Africa, where her family, of Greek origin, settled after the Second World War. Her artistic practice explores the intersection between personal and collective memory, addressing themes such as the struggle against apartheid or the repressive policies of colonizers over the indigenous population. Her work, polyphonic and interdisciplinary, moves between painting, drawing, and cinematic imagery, combining the intimate with the historical and the symbolic with the political. Among her most significant projects stands Shame (Shame), an extensive body of works in which shrunk or diluted bodies configure a universe where shame is the narrative and emotional axis. Siopis traces a history of humanity marked by humiliation and violence, but also by the possibility of recognition and catharsis. The exhibition, tentatively titled "Tinta, sang i història", will also include Charmed Lives (Charmed Lives, 1998-1999), a large canvas of found objects acting as a collective memory woven from individual experiences. On the other hand, the archive occupies a central place in this artist's work: wardrobes with sealed drawers evoke a hidden memory, invisibilized by hegemonic discourses. This exhibition, which presents Siopis's work in Barcelona for the first time, weaves the relationships between memories from the north and the south. Consult more information about the exhibition "Tinta, sang i història" on the Museu Tàpies website.
