He was only 25 at the time. Shot in the summer of 1923 in Paris, the film features a city suddenly frozen and gives rise to surprising visual effects, already revealing the inventiveness of the young filmmaker. However, the work remained on a shelf, lacking a distributor. It was the success of his following film, Entr'acte, that allowed its release in February 1925. Two versions are then circulating: one distributed in London under the title Le Rayon diabolique, before the French release. The restorations by the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé now restore these two versions in their entirety.
