North American saxophonist James Carter (Detroit, 1969) is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary jazz, recognised for his virtuosity, energy and great stylistic versatility. He broke into the international scene with force in the nineties with the album JC on the Set, considered one of the most impactful debuts by a saxophonist of his generation. Trained under the tutelage of trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, he soon shared the stage with figures such as Wynton Marsalis and Lester Bowie. Throughout his career he has explored a wide variety of musical languages, from traditional jazz to funk, latin jazz and contemporary music. He has collaborated with top-tier artists such as Christian McBride, John Medeski, Madeleine Peyroux and the Mingus Big Band, and has developed projects dedicated to essential figures such as Django Reinhardt, Billie Holiday and John Coltrane. Exceptional multi-instrumentalist, he stands out for his mastery of the sax, flute and clarinet. His extraordinary technical and improvisational capacity inspired composer Roberto Sierra to write the Concierto para saxofón y orquesta, a work that fuses classical and jazz languages.
