L'elisir d'amore, one of the great Italian bel canto operas, is a story of pure, transparent, and sincere love with which Gaetano Donizetti signs an authentic masterpiece of the comic genre. The protagonist is Nemorino, an innocent young man who is in love with Adina, a rich and intelligent girl seemingly out of his reach, and who relies on a supposed love elixir to conquer her. The mysterious remedy, sold by the peddler Dulcamara, triggers misunderstandings and comic situations that end revealing that the true engine of the story is the sincerity of the feelings. When Nemorino unexpectedly inherits a fortune, Adina discovers that she also loves him, while Dulcamara attributes the ending to the miracles of his potion. L'elisir d'amore combines humor, sensitivity, and irresistible melodies such as the celebrated aria Una furtiva lagrima, one of the most famous pages of all Italian opera.
