The Monastery of Pedralbes was founded by Queen Elisenda de Montcada in 1327, with the support of her husband, King Jaume II. Following the spiritual currents of the time, the new monastery was inhabited from the outset by Clarissian nuns, the female branch of the Order of Saint Francis, who resided there in practically unbroken continuity until 1983. The building constitutes one of the best models of Catalan Gothic, both for the church and the three-storey cloister, one of the most spacious and harmonious examples of this style. Of the church, the tomb of Queen Elisenda deserves highlighting, which offers two sides: the one facing the church, where her image appears dressed as a sovereign, and the one facing the cloister, where she is shown as a widow and penitent. Likewise, the 14th-century stained-glass windows, various burials of noble families, and the three choirs stand out: the high, the low, and the friars'. Within the monastery, and around the cloister, a series of day cells can be seen, where the religious withdrew for their personal contemplation. With the intention of disseminating heritage and celebrating its seven-hundredth anniversary, the Monastery of Pedralbes opens its doors on Tuesday and Friday afternoons in summer, from Tuesday, June 2 to September 8, so you can enjoy for free what is considered one of the largest Gothic cloisters in the world. From 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. we invite you to the monastery's cloister to enjoy a universe of beauty and a moment of calm and tranquility. The noise and haste of the world remain outside the gates... · This activity is framed within the commemoration of the Monastery of Pedralbes Year.
