L'òpera de tres rals

The Three-Penny Opera, by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill in collaboration with Elisabeth Hauptmann, returns to Catalan stages in a new production directed by Marta Pazos, with musical direction by Dani Espasa and translation by Marc Rosich. It is a co-production of Teatre Lliure and Festival Grec to commemorate the 50th anniversary of both institutions. Against the backdrop of a miserable London, criminals, beggars, and authorities struggle to survive in this fierce portrait of capitalism that, since interwar Berlin, has not lost a gram of its relevance. Mackie the Knife, London's most feared criminal, secretly marries Polly Peachum, the daughter of the usurers who control the city's beggar trade. The Peachums, furious, will hire hitmen to have him imprisoned, unaware that Mackie has an unexpected ally: Tiger Brown, head of the police. In a world where the border between crime and power is purely cosmetic, everyone has a price and survival is the only moral principle that counts.
