Samara Joy

Samara Joy made her debut at our festival in 2022, at the Conservatori del Liceu, leading a trio of French musicians. She arrived in Barcelona for the first time, backed by having won, in 2019, the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, and indeed confirmed all expectations: a young and powerful voice that was not afraid to measure itself against unquestionable references such as Vaughan herself, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, or Carmen McRae. Four years later, Joy—who will have turned 27 just two days before!—debut at the Palau de la Música Catalana leading a septet and with six Grammy Awards to her credit since that now distant 2022. With her latest album, Portrait, she unfolds her art leading this formation and includes arrangements with her own lyrics (Charles Mingus) and music from other references such as Sun Ra and her mentor Barry Harris. "A star has been born," we said after finishing her 2022 recital. It seems we were not too wrong in our prediction... IMPORTANT: Minors under 16 years of age will only be able to access the venue accompanied by their father, mother, or legal guardian. It is essential to present the Responsibility Form (see attached documents) properly printed and completed.
