Like a phoenix, Olot was reborn from the ashes after the devastating earthquakes of 1427 and 1428. The city grew from the 15th century with a new orthogonal grid around the Plaça Major, between the Puig de Sant Esteve and the old town. Nowadays, the centre of Olot is full of vestiges of a modern urban architecture that dominated the old nucleus throughout the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, unknown to most of its inhabitants.
