White walls, closed doors and dark gazes make up the setting of the psychiatric hospital in Thiaroye, Senegal, where documentarian Joris Lachaise sets his camera. Far from the political denunciations of Titicut Follies by Wiseman (1967) or the incessantly shaky camera of Wang Bing (A la folie, 2004), Lachaise invites us to try to understand, through a double alterity, physical and geographical, what is taking place in these institutions whose function, as philosopher Michel Foucault well identified, is that of regulating the political power imposed on the excesses of the psyche. Meeting with Joris Lachaise Born in 1980, Joris Lachaise lives between Marseille and Paris. After a master's degree in philosophy, he turns to documentary investigation and cinema, notably as a camera operator and editor. He collaborates with Jean-Pierre Krief and Arte before making his own films, at the crossroads of anthropology, politics and sound creation. In 2016, he founded the production company Mujô in Marseille. His films, including Convention: Mur noir / Trous blancs (2011) and Ce qu'il reste de la folie (2014), shot in West Africa, question forms of mental and colonial alienation. In 2023, he directed Transfariana, presented in world premiere at the Berlinale, in the Panorama section. Screening in partnership with the Cinémathèque du Doc as part of Doc Month.
