MAUPRAT JEAN EPSTEIN | France, 1926, 1h28 | DCP Cast: Nino Costantini, Sandra Milowanoff, Maurice Schutz, René Ferté… Adapted from the novel by George Sand, Mauprat is the first film directed by Jean Epstein as an independent producer. Generally faithful to the original narrative, the film tells, in Berry in the 18th century, the destiny of Bernard, an orphan raised in violence by his uncle Tristan. Hubert and his daughter Edmée, a young free and determined woman, set out to tear him from his destiny. Shot partly in the natural settings of the Creuse valley, the film reveals Epstein's taste for landscapes, the movements of nature and visual ellipses. Although it ranks among the least known works of the filmmaker, Mauprat is nonetheless a singular work. Epstein renews the relationships between his characters, notably in the relationship between Bernard and Edmée, where gender roles are blurred. The film also marks the beginnings of Luis Buñuel in cinema, then a young assistant to the director. Session in partnership with the City of Perpignan as part of the George Sand Week from 7 November to 13 December, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of her death.
