Robert Ferrer i Chaler was born in Djelfa, Algeria, in 1947, where his father had gone into exile. His culture was French and his language, too. In 1973 he moved to Sabadell as a French teacher. Shortly afterwards, with some colleagues, he founded the Alliance Française on Carrer de les Paus. In 1982, the headquarters moved to Via de Massagué. And in 1995, the Alliance purchased Casa Taulé. For forty years, Ferrer, together with teachers and collaborators, not only created a cultural centre for the dissemination of the French language and culture, but also made known a very important number of artists, thinkers, poets, novelists, musicians, singers, film directors and top European intellectuals. Robert retired in 2012 and died in 2016. Ten years after his death, a civic event will recall the imprint he left on the city. Texts he liked will be read and music he loved will be performed. And the public will be able to say: Robert, chapeau!
