To adapt this autobiographical and sociological narrative, the filmmaker restores the chronology and takes the history of the working class as the guiding thread through the journey of Eribon's parents, notably that of his mother. Archive images, reports and fiction excerpts make up a narrative where individual trajectories, work, the condition of women and political transformations intersect. Film presented by Jean-Gabriel Périot Meeting with Jean-Gabriel Périot Born in France in 1974, Jean-Gabriel Périot has directed several short films at the border of documentary, experimental and fiction. His work is based on archive images, which he assembles and subverts to question collective memory, political and social violence, but also the mechanisms of representation of History. Through editing, he confronts images of different nature and eras to bring out new narratives and question our view of the past. His films, including Dies Irae, Eût-elle été criminelle…, Nijuman No Borei (200 000 ghosts) or The Devil, have been awarded in many festivals around the world. His first feature film, Une jeunesse allemande, opened the Panorama section at the Berlinale 2015 before being released in German, Swiss and French cinemas and receiving several awards. Lumière d'été, his first feature film shown in premiere at the San Sebastian festival, was released in France in summer 2017. Nos défaites was presented at the Forum during the 2019 edition of the Berlinale and Retour à Reims [Fragments], adapted from Didier Eribon and narrated by Adèle Haenel, was selected for the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes in 2021.
